Kwame's Journey to Recovery

Kwame's Journey to Recovery

At just 47 years old, Kwame—a teacher and father of three from Eastern Ghana—suffered a minor stroke that left him with weakness on his left side and slurred speech. Weeks earlier, he had been struggling with extreme fatigue and shortness of breath, but never sought care, assuming it was stress related. Like many in his community, he had little access to specialized cardiovascular services.

Through a regional health screening event organized under G-ACT's BEAT and CARDIA Initiatives, Kwame received a full clinical assessment, including a portable echocardiogram. The diagnosis: dilated cardiomyopathy with severely reduced heart function—likely the underlying cause of his stroke.

Thanks to G-ACT's rapid referral network and support for essential medications, Kwame began treatment immediately. With continued follow-up and rehabilitation, he regained mobility, speech, and most importantly, hope.

"I didn't know I had a heart problem," Kwame says. "Now, I understand my condition and how to manage it. G-ACT saved my life and my family's future."

Dr. Abena's Enhanced Diagnostic Confidence
Frontline Physician Story

Dr. Abena's Enhanced Diagnostic Confidence

As a district physician in rural Northern Ghana, Dr. Abena Mensah often faced the challenge of diagnosing complex heart conditions with limited tools. In a region where advanced diagnostics were hours away, she frequently had to make critical decisions with only a basic stethoscope and clinical judgment.

That changed when G-ACT introduced electronic stethoscopes and training through its CARDIA Initiative. "For the first time, I could clearly distinguish subtle heart murmurs and abnormal rhythms with precision," Dr. Abena shares. "It was like opening a new window into my patients' hearts."

The electronic stethoscope, combined with G-ACT's referral and teleconsultation support, allowed her to confidently identify and refer cases of suspected valvular disease, heart failure, and congenital abnormalities—ensuring patients received timely, specialized care.

"This initiative didn't just give me a device. It empowered me to save lives with certainty. My patients trust me more, and I trust my own assessments. G-ACT has transformed rural cardiac care."

Efua's Empowered Care Delivery
Frontline Nurse Story

Efua's Empowered Care Delivery

Efua Owusu, a community health nurse in the Central Region of Ghana, has served her village clinic for over a decade—often as the first and only point of contact for patients with cardiovascular symptoms. Before G-ACT's intervention, Efua relied on limited resources and broad guidelines, making it difficult to triage or manage cases with confidence.

Through G-ACT's SHAPE and CARDIA Initiatives, Efua received hands-on training and access to streamlined clinical protocols tailored for low-resource settings. These tools empowered her to efficiently screen hypertension, heart failure, stroke risk, and arrhythmias, and to refer patients through clearly defined care pathways.

"Now, I don't feel alone," Efua shares. "With G-ACT's protocols, I know exactly what steps to take. I can explain things better to patients, act faster, and even prevent emergencies."

Thanks to her enhanced confidence and competence, Efua has become a cornerstone of early cardiovascular detection and care in her community—proving that empowered nurses save lives.

A Second Chance for Ama
Patient Success Story

A Second Chance for Ama

When 54-year-old Ama, a market trader from rural Ghana, began experiencing chest pain and fatigue, she had no idea she was living with advanced heart failure. Without access to diagnostic tools or specialized care in her community, her condition went undiagnosed for months—until a mobile health outreach by the G-ACT Foundation's CARDIA Initiative arrived in her district.

Using portable echocardiography and rapid diagnostics, the team quickly identified her condition. Ama was referred through G-ACT's care coordination pathway to a regional hospital, where she received life-saving treatment, including medications and follow-up support. Today, she's back at her stall, healthier and empowered with knowledge about her condition.

"I thought my life was over," Ama shared. "But thanks to G-ACT, I got the care I needed right in my village." Her story is just one example of how G-ACT is turning access into action, and action into life.
