As a cardiologist, I am confronted each day by stories that lay bare the devastating consequences of lack of access to basic cardiovascular care. These are not distant tragedies; they are real, preventable losses affecting families in every corner of the globe. And they demand our urgent attention.
A son rushes to find his father collapsed at home. The diagnosis: a sudden myocardial infarction. With timely preventive care, basic risk screening, medications, and public awareness, this life could have been saved. Instead, a family is left in grief, and a preventable death becomes another painful statistic. A young woman, recovering from a tibial fracture, begins to struggle for breath. What followed was a fatal pulmonary embolism—undiagnosed, untreated, and entirely avoidable. Had diagnostic tools like echocardiography or access to interventional therapies such as aspiration thrombectomy or thrombolytics been available, her story might have ended in recovery rather than tragedy.
A new father watches helplessly as his wife develops a life-threatening arrhythmia—supraventricular tachycardia—shortly after childbirth. In a region without access to basic heart rhythm management services, his sleepless nights were not only filled with worry but with the fear that no help would come. These stories are not rare. They are echoes of a larger crisis unfolding in silence across underserved and developing regions, a crisis of inaccessibility, delayed diagnoses, and lost lives.
This is where the Global Access to Cardiovascular Therapeutics and Diagnostics Foundation steps in. Our mission is bold yet essential: to close the gaps in cardiovascular care that cost millions of lives every year. We are committed to ensuring that no patient is denied the chance to live simply because of where they were born. But we cannot do this alone. This is a call to action for individuals, organizations, policymakers, and industry partners. Every life saved through improved cardiovascular access is a testament to what we can achieve when we act together.
